Periodontal Maintenance

Healthy gums mean healthier teeth and when you maintain good gum health there are fewer chances of dental problems. At the end of the day your gums are the support system for your teeth and when they are healthy it automatically promotes healthier teeth. Good periodontal maintenance is crucial because when you do not look after your gums, multiple dental problems are almost inevitable. If you would like to learn more about periodontal maintenance and why it’s so important to your health, visit us at Henricksen Family Dental - we can work together to ensure your gums are as healthy as possible.

What is periodontal maintenance?

Periodontal maintenance refers to maintaining healthy gums. More specifically, periodontal maintenance care is used after you have received deep cleanings to help combat gum disease or gum infection. It is a type of cleaning that focuses specifically on the soft tissue around your teeth as opposed to cleaning the teeth themselves. This is necessary because individuals with gum disease or other infection can lead to the formation “pockets” between their gums and their teeth. Tartar and bacteria can collect in those pockets and enable infection to fester, leading to bigger dental health issues.

Prevent Periodontal Infections

Periodontal infection is very difficult to detect. Most of the time people ignore the early signs of this infection. Waking up early in the morning with a sticky film over your gums, for example, is a symptom of a periodontal infection that often goes unheeded. And when untreated, the infection can spread to your teeth and sometimes even their roots. This could result in tooth loss, periodontal infections, gingivitis, and irreversible gum problems. If that happens, our professionals will need you to come to us multiple times so that we can get rid of all the infection and ensure that it doesn't spread any further.

If you routinely see dental professionals, however, you don’t have to worry about unexpectedly running into a serious infection. Regular periodontal maintenance ensures that your gums are healthy and that any potential issues are detected early, before they become serious problems that might require more invasive procedures to fix.

Build Strong Teeth

Your gums are the basis of your teeth and if they are compromised, your teeth will be weaker than they should be and perhaps more prone to dental issues. Strong teeth depend on strong gums, and healthy gums require healthy teeth to maintain them. The two issues are inherently connected and you should make just as much of an effort to maintain your gums as you do your teeth. Getting your gums inspected by us regularly is something you should consider a priority because it will help you maintain good oral hygiene.

Oral hygiene is not just about brushing your teeth and cleaning your tongue, it's about looking after your gums as well.
